IRS Criticized for Plan to Impose Social Security Taxes on Stock Options
The IRS has proposed that Social Security, Medicare and unemployment taxes be imposed on the exercise of incentive stock options as well as options under employee stock-purchase plans. However, an exemption is provided from income tax withholding. The regulations would take effect in the beginning of 2003.
The proposal has drawn intense criticism, some claiming that it violates the law and that a congressional override is required.
The comment period expires February 14, 2002.
